The Student Government passed a bill Tuesday night that gave official approval of the renovation of Shorty's. Senior Allison Stewart, the SO treasurer and the chairwomanof the Shortfs Renovation Committee, emphasized that the planned renovation will be solely structural. A hallway will be made connecting Shorty's and the television alcove adjacent to the food · court. Bathrooms and a storage room will be installed adjacent to this hallway. Booths, a stage, a pull-down projection television, a new · sound system and a bar will be installed. A pool table is also being considered. The renovation will cost $188,000, more ·than double the original estimate. Fundraising will be the next step in the process, Stewart said. Various plans to raise money for the renovation are currently being considered. Stewart emphasized the importance of keeping Shorty's high on the list of priorities, saying, "If we don't keep pushing, it's going to get dropped." Some legislators expressed concern about when alcohol would be introduced to Shorty's. According to Stewart, the renovation will be completed prior to the addition of alcohol. It was explained that including the serving of alcohol into the renovation plans will make it more difficult to get funding. In other SG news, the proposal for a new soccer stadium has been passed by the Capital Planning Committee, according to sophomore Charles Turner, the chairman of the Appropriations and Budget Committee. Two official-size stadiums will be constructed at the comer of Polo field, across from the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity house. One field will be a practice field; the other will be built with bleachers and will have a capacity of2000 to 2500, Turner said. "The current field is too small, and Astroturf is not official by World Cup standards," Turner said. Construction will start in late February or early March. The legislature passed a bill encouraging the Committee on Academic Affairs to change the 1994-1995 exam schedule so exams would start on the Monday following the last day of class, instead of Saturday.
